Azcona, Rafael

Azcona, Rafael
b. 1926, Logroño
   Writer
Humourist, screenplay writer and novelist, Azcona, part of the "Mid-Century Generation", achieved considerable success as a satirist. Vida del repelente niño Vicente (That Repulsive Kid Vicente) (1955) and Los muertos no se tocan, nene (The Dead Aren't for Touching, Kid) (1956) belong to the genre of humour, as does El pisito (The Apartment) (1957), whose film version enjoyed great success. Los ilusos (Dreamers) (1958) satirizing Madrid's literary "wannabes", and Pobre, paralítico y muerto (Pauper, Paralytic and Cadaver) (1960) present increasingly sombre humour, while Los europeos (The Europeans) (1960), is a soberly realistic "social" novel, whose occasional satire gives way to critical intention and crude descriptions.
